Romain Thevenin

Romain Thevenin is a Parisian designer best known for his incredible couture pieces showcased in music videos, makeup campaigns, and on the runway, of course. I had the opportunity to chat with him to learn more about his journey and what's shaped his perspective as an artist.

In March 2022 at Los Angeles Fashion Week Presented by Art Hearts Fashion, you shared elaborate, architectural pieces. One stand-out ensemble was seemingly Medusa-inspired; as the model strode down the catwalk, the bottom of the corset appeared to move on its own. What are some of your creative inspirations throughout the design process and what motivates you to create such unique, wearable art?

My collection presented at LA Fashion Week was inspired by the video game Mortal Kombat. During the show, twenty models walked on the catwalk exuding the appearance and energy of powerful and attractive gods of war. Chains, bands, spikes, a dark range of colors...all of these elements were inspired by the video game. I love to find inspiration in Science Fiction art, movies, and games. I’m inspired by visual artists as well, such as painters and sculptors. A little anecdote about the Medusa corset: by manipulating the iron rings by hand, it created a very cool 3D chainmail. With my team, we created a lot of chains, and one night I dreamt about the volume and details of this unique piece. I woke up ASAP and immediately began to create this masterpiece.

Why is creating movement within your pieces important to you?

I love that my pieces have movement - I want to give life to my pieces. I want them to move with the models as they walk. People who wear my pieces bring life to them.

You've found a balance between wearable couture and Avant-Garde fashion. What has this process been like?

From the time I was a young man, I've always loved costume and seemingly unwearable clothing. I was absolutely in love with Lady Gaga's fashion choices [particularly at the start of her career]. All the creativity in her music videos and the extravagance of the costumes; I think she is responsible for my career.

Who are some of your favorite artists?

There are too many! I love artists like Doja Cat, Madonna, Lady Gaga, and Beyoncé - all the pop culture inspires me. Some visual artists I love are Steven Klein, Giger, Gareth Pugh, Thierry MUGLER, and Iris van Herpen.

As you're growing into a global brand, what have been some of your favorite moments of growth and success?

I think my best moments in my career have been when I've explored new environments. I work a lot now for French television and it's another world. I remember my first meeting with my agent in Los Angeles as well, they are incredible. I definitely found my American family and without them, I would not be here to speak with you! They assist me in my goals and even helped me receive the opportunity to dress Lady Gaga. And, of course, my first show in Los Angeles was exceptional. I thank my sponsors again for believing in my work!

Recently, you had the opportunity to design a pair of gloves for Saweetie's MAC Cosmetics campaign. How was that experience?

I love Saweetie! She's actually worn my brand three times; for the campaign, for a magazine shoot, and for the video "Faking Love" featuring Anitta. She is so cute and glamorous. I can't wait to meet her!

Is there any advice you'd like to share with emerging designers who might be trying to figure out who they are and what they want to create?

For anyone who wants to become a designer, you have to be passionate, patient, and courageous. It's a long road to notoriety in this universe, but nothing is impossible.

What is one thing you were excited to accomplish this past summer?

Finishing the new collection because people are not ready for it. I use a lot of 3D printing, it's my new toy and the possibilities are endless.

Is there anything else you'd like to share with L'Avenir de la Mode?

I would like to thank all the people who've helped me with my brand! Especially my parents and friends who have been there from the beginning.
